Europe’s Winter Demand Pulls More U.S. LNG Across the Atlantic

Europe’s winter storage build is drawing more U.S. liquefied natural gas across the Atlantic, with the region taking 54% of September exports as total U.S. shipments reached 10.9 million tonnes. European gas prices moved above Asian benchmarks, encouraging LNG suppliers to send more cargoes to Europe as buyers replenished storage ahead of the heating season (Reuters). Higher LNG exports add to U.S. natural gas demand just as seasonal heating needs begin to increase, creating potential upward pressure on domestic prices. However, strong domestic production and relatively high inventories should help absorb that additional demand, with the EIA’s October outlook expecting U.S. gas price increases to remain relatively contained despite continued export growth (EIA).

Strategic Moves | Capital flows in energy, infrastructure, and policy

Energy Systems & Grid Reliability

  • Google signed a 20-year power agreement with Constellation that will support more than $4.3 billion of investment to add 890 MW of nuclear capacity through upgrades to existing reactors, with the first incremental power expected in 2028.
  • Antora Energy secured third-party equity backing and an energy supply agreement for a planned 5.8 GWh thermal battery at Pratt Energy’s Kansas biorefinery, targeting round-the-clock industrial heat from stored electricity beginning in 2027.
  • New York State awarded contracts for 950 MW of battery storage across eight projects targeted for 2030, using 15-year revenue-support agreements to make storage projects easier to finance while requiring payments back when benchmark market revenues exceed agreed levels.

Resilient Infrastructure & Materials

  • FedEx placed a $300 million order with Harbinger for 2,000 electric delivery trucks, marking the manufacturer’s largest bulk order to date with deliveries expected by the end of 2027.
  • MacroCycle signed a multi-year agreement with Meta to sell environmental certificates tied to recycled plastic production, helping finance its first U.S. recycling plant with 5,000 tonnes of annual capacity.
  • Dutch concrete recycler SL Materials secured a €100 million investment from Aviva Investors and ABN AMRO to expand production and develop new sites, recovering cement, sand, and gravel from demolished concrete for reuse in construction.

Resilience Finance & Policy

  • The U.S. Department of Energy offered Vistra a conditional loan commitment of up to $4.2 billion for nuclear upgrades expected to preserve nearly 4 GW of generation and add 433 MW of capacity in Pennsylvania and Ohio.
  • Zelestra closed $350 million in financing for a 203 MW solar project on former coal-mining land in Indiana, backed by a long-term Meta power contract and targeting operations by the end of 2027.
  • California signed new virtual power plant laws directing regulators to better value customer batteries, EV chargers and flexible appliances as grid resources, potentially reducing the need for costly peak-generation capacity and conventional grid upgrades.
