The Race for Reliable Power Is Reshaping U.S. Energy Investment

Rising U.S. electricity demand is intensifying the search for reliable, round-the-clock power, while delays in gas pipelines and turbines and lengthy conventional nuclear construction schedules are widening interest in alternatives such as enhanced geothermal and advanced reactors. Corporate buyers are helping advance this buildout through development funding and long-term power agreements. Translating new power commitments into dependable operating capacity remains a central challenge, with construction costs, specialized fuel availability, and performance at commercial scale shaping the pace of deployment (Reuters).

Strategic Moves | Capital flows in energy, infrastructure, and policy

Energy Systems & Grid Reliability

  • Amazon is funding development of a proposed 960 MW nuclear plant at a former Indiana coal site, where 12 small modular reactors would supply the public grid and Amazon’s data centers, with timing dependent on X-energy successfully delivering its first Xe-100 project in Texas.
  • AEP announced a $4 billion project for 702 MW of fuel-cell generation in Wyoming under a 20-year power agreement with Google, targeting full operation by the end of 2028 with plans to integrate carbon capture.
  • Flatiron Energy has secured approximately $850 million in financing for a 1,200 MWh battery project in Chelsea, Massachusetts, expected to become the largest standalone battery system on the East Coast and provide peaking capacity and reliability support to the Boston-area grid beginning in late 2027.
  • TotalEnergies and KKR agreed to add a 700 MW solar portfolio valued at $1.2 billion to their U.S. renewables joint venture, expanding the partnership by 50% with three projects in Texas and Ohio expected online by the first quarter of 2027.

Resilient Infrastructure & Materials

  • Ambrosia Energy began work on a 10 GWh battery factory near Austin, Texas, to manufacture battery packs for its solar-plus-storage plants serving data centers, targeting full production in two to three years.
  • The New York Public Service Commission committed $111.5 million to the state’s first two utility-scale thermal networks in Haverstraw and Buffalo, using underground and wastewater heat to displace fossil-fuel heating and improve heat-pump efficiency.
  • CarbiCrete issued its first carbon removals from cement-free concrete under Verra’s CO₂-utilization methodology, marking a commercial milestone for building materials that combine industrial by-products with permanently stored carbon dioxide.

Resilience Finance & Policy

  • The U.S. DOE announced approximately $967 million in funding through the Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grant program to support infrastructure upgrades by states, territories, and tribes, aimed at improving power reliability and affordability.
  • The European Commission launched a new water investment accelerator to support 20 pilot projects across water efficiency, clean water, and nature-based resilience, helping developers attract private capital through advisory support, project preparation, financial structuring, and investor access.
