U.S. Data Center Buildout, Battery Delays, and Mineral Grants Reshape the Next Infrastructure Cycle

Six months into the U.S.-Iran war, Qatar’s liquefied natural gas exports have fallen 96%, to just 18 cargoes versus 509 over the same period last year, costing the country an estimated $24 billion in lost gas sales, roughly five months of state revenue. U.S. LNG exporters have helped offset part of the shortfall, redirecting supply into European and Asian markets, while domestic utilities and industrial buyers brace for a tighter global gas balance and higher winter prices if the conflict persists. The disruption is reshaping U.S. export economics and raising the stakes for domestic power generation, transmission, and energy infrastructure investment already strained by surging AI data center demand (Reuters).

Strategic Moves | Capital flows in energy, infrastructure, and policy

Energy Systems & Grid Reliability

  • TerraPower and SK Innovation signed a preliminary global agreement opening SK’s participation in TerraPower’s small modular reactor projects, including its Wyoming Natrium plant targeting commercial operation in 2031, as Korean suppliers seek entry into AI-driven U.S. SMR demand.
  • Rezerra completed a $23.8 million acquisition of 49 battery energy storage systems with a 20-year servicing arrangement, expanding dispatchable grid-balancing capacity to help stabilize supply during peak demand periods.
  • A flood of U.S. battery storage projects is piling up in interconnection queues, as utilities struggle to complete the grid upgrades needed to plug them in, delaying deployments meant to support rising electricity demand from data centers and electrification.

Resilient Infrastructure & Materials

  • The U.S. Department of Energy awarded $500 million in grants to seven companies, including Lilac Solutions, Jervois, and Nth Cycle at $100 million each, to build domestic lithium, cobalt, and battery-recycling capacity and reduce reliance on Chinese-processed minerals.
  • Anthro Energy broke ground on a Louisville factory with 25GWh of planned electrolyte capacity, enough material for more than 300,000 EVs, aiming to supply a domestic, China-free path toward solid-state batteries.
  • Tesla is considering a proposed $10.1 billion solar factory in Fort Bend County, Texas, projecting roughly 9,700 jobs and commercial operations by early 2029, which would rank among the largest domestic solar manufacturing investments to date.

Resilience Finance & Policy

  • ArcLight Capital Partners committed $1 billion to launch Anchor Point Transmission, a new independent company formed to partner with U.S. utilities on high-voltage transmission development, responding to record grid investment needs driven by AI computing and electrification.
  • Nvidia made a minority investment in Cloverleaf Infrastructure, reported at several hundred million dollars, to accelerate development of power and site infrastructure for AI data centers across the U.S.
  • PJM’s bilateral power-deal push is steering generators and data centers toward long-term contracts after capacity auctions failed to clear enough supply, creating a more direct financing path for dispatchable projects in the largest U.S. power market.
