U.S. Power Demand Is Entering a New Record Era

The EIA expects U.S. electricity demand to rise from a record 4,195 billion kWh in 2025 to 4,268 billion kWh in 2026 and 4,391 billion kWh in 2027, driven largely by AI data centers and electrification. Natural gas is still expected to supply 40% of U.S. generation, while renewables rise from 24% to 27% and nuclear holds at 18%, leaving grid reliability dependent on multiple generation sources expanding alongside load. The operational challenge is increasingly physical: record electricity consumption requires generation, transmission and storage infrastructure to scale at comparable speed, or power availability becomes a constraint on data-center growth, industrial expansion and broader electrification.

Strategic Moves | Capital flows in energy, infrastructure, and policy

Energy Systems & Grid Reliability

  • Base Power raised $1 billion at a $13 billion valuation after deploying 500+ MWh of home batteries, using distributed storage in Texas and Illinois to cut peak-grid stress and blackout risk as U.S. power demand rises.
  • Valar Atomics raised $1 billion in equity plus a $200 million credit line to scale factory-built SMRs, after its Ward 250 reactor powered an Nvidia Blackwell system and supported plans for a 30MW waterless AI factory, strengthening firm power capacity for data-center growth.
  • Form Energy raised $750 million to expand West Virginia manufacturing of 100-hour iron-air batteries, supporting an 80GWh project backlog and strengthening long-duration grid storage as U.S. data-center demand and renewable capacity accelerate.
  • SpaceX spent $329 million on Tesla Megapacks in 2026, likely for xAI data centers, using utility-scale batteries to provide instant backup power and smooth volatile GPU loads that can otherwise raise grid charges or overwhelm on-site generation.
  • Reservoir raised $8 million to scale smart heat-pump water heaters that use nearly 4× less energy than electric units, shifting household demand off peak and turning 1,000 planned installations into megawatt-scale flexible grid capacity.

Resilient Infrastructure & Materials

  • American Airlines completed the first U.S. commercial flight using Infinium eSAF, produced at its Corpus Christi Pathfinder facility with 90%+ lower lifecycle emissions, while Project Roadrunner targets 5 million+ gallons annually from 2027 to diversify aviation fuel supply.
  • Samsung SDI will acquire GM’s 49.99% stake in their $3.5 billion Indiana battery plant, shifting up to 36GWh of capacity toward U.S. energy storage systems as slower EV demand redirects manufacturing toward grid-scale battery demand.
  • Microsoft signed an offtake for up to 23,602 carbon removal units from Crew Carbon’s wastewater alkalinity technology, using existing treatment plants to permanently store CO₂ while improving wastewater-system performance and scalability.

Resilience Finance & Policy

  • Sila secured a $1.4 billion U.S. Department of Defense loan to expand its Moses Lake, Washington silicon-carbon anode plant from 2GWh to 5× current capacity, reducing U.S. dependence on Chinese graphite while supporting higher-density batteries for EVs, drones and defense systems.
